A major earthquake struck in the southwest Pacific Ocean at a depth of 27.7 km (17.2 miles) beneath Espiritu Santo, the largest island in the Vanuatu island chain. The epicenter was 347.1 km (215.7 miles) NNW of the capitol Port-Vila. A tsunami warning was issued for the region but was withdrawn a few hours later. There are no reports of damage or injuries.
