Description
New experimental validation of glacier sliding laws has contrasted long-standing sliding theory. The applicability of laboratory and theoretical treatments of sliding is under debate but can be assessed through close monitoring of glacial slip in the real world. Saskatchewan Glacier, in Banff National Park, is an ideal natural glaciological laboratory to study glacial slip and sliding laws because its unique bed shape closely aligns with the simplifying assumptions posed in both the theoretical and laboratory investigations. I propose to deploy a ground-based geophysical survey using passive seismic instrumentation at this glacier to acquire a dataset capable of testing the applicability of these sliding theories.
