The object is to deploy and array of 3 component seismometers on the Vatnajokull Ice Cap over the site of two active calderas, which last erupted in October 1996. Tomographic studies of the upper crustal structure will look at the location, interconnection and size of the magma chambers in the upper crust and investigate whether melt ponds near the Moho at the base of the crust. Seismic sources will come from local and more distand Icelandic earthquakes. A pilot experiment in summer 1997 recorded a total of 233 earthquakes in 3 months. There will also be 10 explosive shots around the ice cap.
