As determined by the US Geological Survey National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC), a magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred Saturday 160 km (100 miles) northeast of Santiago del Estero, Argentina. This was a very deep (584 km / 363 miles) earthquake which occurred within the Nazca Plate as it subducts into the mantle beneath the South American Plate. Because of it's depth, nearby towns are reporting only light shaking with no damage or injuries.
