Factsheets and infographics on protecting yourself in a tsunami hazard zone
Whether coastal Alaska is your home, workplace, or a travel destination, it is important to know how to stay safe in the event of a tsunami. Safety actions vary for fjord and coastal communities in Alaska.
There is a higher potential for a local (landslide-caused) tsunami in fjord communities (such as Seward, Whittier, Valdez, Homer, and others). Earthquake-triggered landslides can disturb coastline waters and cause a tsunami that arrives within minutes, so immediate evacuation–even during earthquake shaking–is critical. In coastal communities that face the Pacific Ocean, people should Drop, Cover, and Hold On during shaking, then evacuate to higher ground.
These factsheets and infographics teach about how residents and visitors can be tsunami-safe in Alaskan fjord communities and coastal communities exposed to the Pacific Ocean. These can be used and displayed in any setting: schools, libraries, museums, etc.
