Why are the volcanoes in the Pacific Northwest not located along the coast where the oceanic plate first goes under the continental plate?
The oceanic plate does not heat up enough to release fluids until it has descended 50 miles below the surface of the earth. It reaches this depth about 100 miles inland from the coast.
